Next up was the big question mark of the evening: Cortez. Never seen, never heard, but instantly captivated. In the vein of Roadsaw or Sixty Watt Shaman, the Bostonians delivered a solid half-hour of heavy rock like only the Americans know how. Big punch, great groove, catchy choruses, and excellent stage presence—all the elements were there to win over an audience that didn’t hesitate long before abandoning its observer role. Seemingly unaffected by jet lag, the Americans gave it their all over these two evenings, and beyond the quality of the compositions and the antics of a slightly hammy but very likeable singer, what stood out most was the cohesion of a band eager to share the joy they felt being on stage.
